Telling the history of the city of Amsterdam.

Location

Amsterdam Museum, Amsterdam, The Netherlands

Objective

The Amsterdam Historical Museum is housed in a magnificent building that used to be the city orphanage. Entering through an archway you find yourself in the inner courtyard and you can walk through the Civic Guard Gallery, a vast corridor where the 17th century group portraits of civic guards gaze down at you from the walls. The museum offers a permanent exhibition telling the history of the city of Amsterdam. There are countless fascinating details about this old city and it’s people. The collection consists of paintings, prints, models, objects and archeological finds.

Approach

In conjunction with the renewal of the contemporary history wing of the museum, NorthernLight provided consultancy for the design of 40 interactive and audio-visual exhibits.

As part of this renewal NorthernLight developed an eye-catching exhibit on the growth of the city of Amsterdam throughout the centuries. A large computer generated projection shows a digital chronological map of the development of Amsterdam from its beginnings around 1200 to the building of the new district ‘IJburg’ in 2002. The growth of the city is explained in video films in various rooms in the museum, and the chronological map is accompanied by an extensive commentary.
