Awareness programme to create community support for sustainable planning in Saõ Paulo metropolitan area
Location
Santos, Brazil
Objective
In cities all over the world coastal developments are affecting mangrove forests. Awareness and community support is vital to achieve sustainable urbanization within the bio-capacity of cities. Urban planners, Volpi Urbane, recently started Santos ‘awareness week’ and asked NorthernLight to take care of the kids and student programme.
Approach
Local messages are far more likely to resonate with people, especially with kids so NorthernLight developed and hosted school workshops for kids aged 11 and 13. The kids developed solutions to challenges relating to metropolitan habitats in general and the Santos estuary in particular. The activities are designed to garner support for a permanent living lab, including a seminar and cross disciplinary workshops for university students. Eventually the goal is to turn this in an annual awareness festival.
