Life, harmony, ocean
NorthernLight won the international competition to design the exhibitions of China’s new National Maritime Museum to be located in the port city of Tianjin close to Beijing. Stressing the importance of the oceans and creating a ‘sea mind’ will be the main goals of the new National Maritime Museum China. This exciting new project will have a big impact on the city of Tianjin and the whole of China. Educationally, culturally and by attracting millions of residents and tourists to the area.
Approach
The design of the building comprises five hall structures radiating out to the port harbour and converging in a central ‘Preface Hall’. In this preface hall, the visitor can choose to follow the ‘Man’ or ‘Nature’ narrative. Nature has several halls spanning evolution, ancient oceans, geology, modern oceans, it’s beauty and diversity and the need to protect our marine environment. ‘Man’ illustrates the catalyst function oceans had as to spread trade, ideas and civilization throughout the world. Over 100.000 specimen, several immersive stage sets, and over 20 narratives theatres will make this an unique attraction.
