Mysterious Wunderkammers in Junges Schloss Stuttgart

Mysteries happen and treasures can be found. In this exhibition young visitors are immersed in the Stone Age, Roman Age, medieval, and modern times.

Location

Landesmuseum, Stuttgart, Germany

Objective

Whereas the typical museum visitor is over 60 years old, the region of the Landesmuseum is populated by a much younger society. Junges Schloss is a new institution at the Altes Schloss, which wants to address children aged four to ten as well as their families. To attract this younger age group, the client asked NorthernLight to develop innovative forms of transferring contents to kids.

Approach

NorthernLight designed “The Mysterious Wunderkammer”, in co-creation with a council of local children. Many of their content-related ideas and exhibit proposals inspired the design. In the resulted interactive exhibition, children explore the history of the region. Children embark on a journey from the Stone Age to the Renaissance. The Cabinet of Curiosities forms the exhibition’s core element. In this dimly lit room modeled on a Renaissance library countless treasures are hidden. Children can touch almost everything. In the experience rooms, children can experience what it takes to be a Roman trader, a medieval knight or an archaeologist.
