Timeless love story set in a historical location
In 1634, the world-renowned artist Rembrandt van Rijn married Saskia Uylenburgh, the love of his life. Their love was celebrated, and guests traveled from near and far to gather in the Van Harenskerk, the church at the heart of the Frisian village St.-Annaparochie. However, there’s no trace of the society wedding of the century between the renowned painter and the esteemed Frisian mayor’s daughter. The Rembrandt & Saskia Experience aims to change that by presenting an immersive experience of their timeless love story at an authentic location.
Through the initiative of the board of Stichting Rembrandt & Saskia op het Bildt, and in close collaboration with Innovatiepact Fryslân, as well as consultant Floris de Gelder, NorthernLight developed plans for a Rembrandt & Saskia Experience. This has led to an ambitious masterplan and concept aimed at bringing the stories and history of Rembrandt & Saskia in St.-Annaparochie to life, enriching both the cultural and tourist landscape in the Bildt region and of Friesland.
An enchanting experience
In The Rembrandt & Saskia Experience, the love story of the couple is brought to life with innovative audiovisual techniques. The visitor journey begins with an immersive projection show that transports you back in time. In addition to the show, there will be various objects for visitors to explore with all their senses. They can even transform into wedding guests from that time in a ‘magical mirror’. The experience tells a historical love story, but addresses current themes that still provoke and inspire today.
Connecting with the surroundings and locals
The story also comes to life in the surroundings. The outdoor route takes you in the footsteps of Rembrandt and Saskia in St.-Annaparochie and other special places in the Bildt and Friesland; an outdoor experience that connects The Rembrandt & Saskia Experience with the region. Additionally, various activities will be organized. The annual Rembrandt market already serves as a major attraction in the region. The plan offers numerous opportunities for collaboration with local artists, creators, cultural institutions, and museums in the region. This collaboration will enable The Rembrandt & Saskia Experience to enrich and establish a unique position within the cultural landscape.
The concept has been fully developed and is currently undergoing detailed refinement by the project team. The plans have been presented to residents, the municipality, and stakeholders, receiving enthusiastic feedback, including interest from the press. With these promising plans, the goal is to realize the experience within two years, attracting visitors from both near and far, making it an absolute must-visit.
