A special gift to the city
The Radboud University is celebrating its 100th anniversary by donating two art installations to the city of Nijmegen and its residents. The ‘Whisper Dishes’ will be placed along the Waal River, in the heart of the city where people come together. NorthernLight designed these remarkably urban art installations. People can listen to each other and engage in conversations from a distance. Audiences, ranging from the young to the old, will be captivated by the bowls and encouraged to take a closer look. They promise to be more than art installations; the dishes aim to bring people closer, spark curiosity, and encourage reflection, ultimately enhancing Nijmegen’s cityscape and the lives of its residents.
Place to meet
The Whisper Dishes represents the university’s core values: reflection, curiosity, and connection. While they may initially appear similar, each dish possesses a unique character representing the values it stands for. The one symbolises reflection, with an inward focus and introspective qualities. Around the dish are posts with qr-codes. Visitors can scan the qr-codes and listen to inspiring quotes or reflective podcasts. The other dish stirs visitors’ curiosity by bringing to life past, present and future stories about the area. A multimedia experience that makes the invisible visible, fostering an outward-looking, inquisitive perspective about what is happening in one’s surroundings. While visitors listen to the stories and watch the original images on their phones, they unwind in the natural surroundings. Having conversations through the dishes creates a connection between people, and visitors will easily meet around the installations and experience them spontaneously. Mini-lectures can also be organized around the dishes. In this way, the Radboud University and other institutions will transfer knowledge to the future generation at this special location.
