Visitor experience and architectural planning for wetland park and visitor centres ‘t Zwin
Location
Knokke, Belgium
Objective
‘t Zwin is a magnificent nature park on the border between Belgium and the Netherlands. At high tide the mudflats and salt marshes are entirely flooded by the sea, which is what makes this intertidal area so unique and always changing. ‘t Zwin sought a creative agency to develop a master plan to increase its touristic offer, expand it’s infrastructure and enhance the nature experience.
Approach
With the slogan ‘‘t Zwin every day different’, visitors are invited to make frequent return visits to see the different seasons reflected in this wetland area. Together with architects KCAP and landscape designers, ‘the Stijlgroep’, NorthernLight developed an artistic vision as well as a business case for a total nature-experience network including, visitor centre, observation post, hotel and F and E facilities. Reflecting the brand proposition of change, we turned this tourist attraction into an evolving and transformative nature experience as well. The central visitor centre is an all weather educational offer. Mobile pavilions are an integral part of the landscape and function to offer seasonal services. An app provides an augmented experience and offers walking and cycling tours.
