Interactive intervention in museum garden to celebrate 175 years of cultural encounters

To attract families to Museum Volkenkunde Leiden it’s garden was transformed into an interactive expedition ground.

Location

Garden of Museum Volkenkunde, Leiden, The Netherlands

Objective

Museum Volkenkunde wants to attract a younger audience. During the rebuilding of its permanent exhibitions, Museum Volkenkunde experimented with new communication forms that would attract families. On Expedition was a temporary exhibition reflecting on the 175 years of existence of the Museum.

Approach

As if a couple of trucks lost their cargo, large expedition cases have randomly been placed throughout the site in front of the Museum in Leiden. In the first story case, a movie is shown about the journeys of 4 famous Dutch explorers. The movie was made with help of their diaries and original film-material. Visitors test their explorer courage and skills in the second case. In the third case, visitors make a selfie as if being in the center of an African tribe. While (grand)parents try to match museum objects with the right expedition story, the children climb and crawl in the playing area inside the last case.
