Everything in the universe moves at its own speed
NorthernLight is renewing the Speed gallery at the Science Museum of Virginia in Richmond with seven new exhibits that deepen the visitor experience, create a stronger narrative connection between speed and time and invite visitors to look at speed from a fresh perspective. The guiding concept behind the renewal is simple yet universal: everything in the universe moves at its own speed. From natural processes to technological breakthroughs, from motion to time, the renewed gallery will explore speed as one of the fundamental forces shaping our world.
The existing Speed gallery is one of the museum’s iconic experiences, exploring motion and time across science, nature and technology through more than 50 stations and hundreds of unique experiences. The renewal builds on this strong foundation by adding a clearer storyline, a refreshed design language and new interactive exhibits that connect scientific knowledge with meaningful visitor engagement. Within this renewed narrative, the museum’s impressive SR-71 Blackbird supersonic jet remains a powerful presence, becoming part of a broader story about speed, innovation and human ingenuity.
Next steps
The project started in January 2025 with the Concept Design phase. In mid-February, NorthernLight presented the concept in Richmond, Virginia. The final design was completed and delivered on June 1 and was enthusiastically received by the client.
Production partner Bruns is now entering the engineering and production phase, while Trivium continues with media design and development. The renewed Speed gallery is scheduled to open in January 2027.
